Anecdote of the week

My week has been somewhat uneventful at school. The weather here has been not exactly pretty, depending on what kind of weather you like. Its been hovering around 0° sleeting. This means that there is no pretty snow, and yet its way too cold to run outside and dance in the rain. There is slushy ice on the streets that get the bottoms of your pant legs wet, which in turn freezes your ankles off with every step. Between this and gaining the seemingly inevitable exchange student 5- 10 pounds, not getting enough sleep and missing out on a class trip today due to my miscomprehensions, I am feeling a little under the weather lately. Its not as easy as it seems sometimes, especially when your tired. However with a free afternoon and a nice warm bed to crawl into for a nap, life doesn't seem so hard.

....And now to cheer myself up I will share with you the anecdote of the week....

So I went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in French. It was really quite good, but I do prefere the books. My comprehension of the movie was not too bad but there were a lot of words I didn't understand because things like Muggle, Hogwarts, death eaters and all the names of the professors at Hogwarts, for the most part are translated into french.
So I was watching the movies sort of half understanding it, then it got to this part, just before Voldemort fights Harry where Voldemort yells at Potter what I understood to be, "Take your bagette Harry, take your bagette and fight me!" I almost laughed out loud, he was serious? Harry needed a bagette to fight him? The french are crazy about their bread. Then of course I realized, much later, Bagette means wand in french. Go figure. But still I find that amazing, when picking a name of something that contains magical powers and is the starring item in numerous famous fairy tales; something that is more precious and powerful than almost anything else in the world, the French chose the name "Bagette."
In my opinion this speaks volumes about the french culture.
